Financial site WalletHub released the study this week ahead of America’s Independence Day. It took into account the following factors to varying degrees:
Military Engagement
- Percentage of Residents Who Enlisted in the Military in 2013
- Number of Veterans per 100,000 Residents
- Number of Active-Duty Military Personnel per 100,000 Residents
Civic Engagement
- Percentage of Residents Who Voted in the 2012 Presidential Election
- Volunteer Rate
- Number of Peace Corps Volunteers per 100,000 Residents
- Frequency of Google Searches for American Flags (Adjusted by Total Number of Searches)
- Civics Education Requirement
Virginia and Washington state topped the list, while New Jersey and New York rounded out the bottom. Most of the top 15 states came from the south.
Georgia had the highest percentage of residents who enlisted in the military, while North Dakota had the lowest. Alaska had the most veterans per capita, while New York had the fewest.
Vermont had the most Peace Corps volunteers per capita, and Mississippi had the fewest. Minnesota had the best presidential election turnout in 2012, while Arizona had the worst. Utah has the highest volunteer rate in the nation, and Louisiana has the lowest.
According to the study, red states are slightly more patriotic than blue states. The distinction is made based on the results of the 2012 presidential election.
